The Americana Building - Houston, Texas Completion date: September, 2000
(Click any photo for a larger image) The Americana Building is a 1950's office building comprising 190,000 square feet in 10 floors. It has undergone a major renovation to become downtown Houston's newest high profile, high tech loft office building. The renovated building has a new techno look with polished black granite exterior wall facings and a 42 foot high by 80 foot long modular frosted glass, silver anodized window curtain wall, backlit to reveal the name of the building AMERICANA etched in clear letters at the top of the marquee. An 80 foot by 9 foot curved clear glass and chrome painted structural steel canopy will provide inclement weather protection. The tower and it’s Bris Solas fins are newly painted in tones of light and dark grey to enhance the three dimensionality of the fins which were originally designed to serve as sun screens. Nine inch aluminum louvers have been applied over the existing clay block parking structure with a mirrored sign band, intermediate band and top cap. The lobby, elevator lobbies and restrooms have new black granite wall panels and flooring, enhanced by simulated Tigerwood panels accented with black reveal banding. Formerly a bank, 1400 Main Street experienced a complete renovation. Guests enter the street level lobby under a long black canopy which stretches to the curb. The lobby retained it’s existing sweeping cantilevered staircase with a glass balustrade. The flooring was replaced with taupe/grey/orange marble which blends beautifully with the existing orange marble tiled walls. What was once tellers' booths and bank managers' offices is now an elegant restaurant and private dining room done in shades of taupe and cream. The second floor is now an attorney’s office and a title company, while the lower level is a charming English style pub.

The nine story office building built in 1975, located adjacent to the Astrodome, is one of a group of nondescript buildings in a freeway office park. Kirk And Associates designed the 1999 exterior renovations painting the building in an ombre’ effect with dark gray at street level shading through a range of grays to lightest gray at the roof line. The facade was augmented with a wave shaped canopy of steel and glass, United States, Texas and corporate flags, and royal palms flanking the entrance. A new pedestrian bridge from the dark grey painted parking garage to the entrance was added. New draught resistant landscaping with colorful annual flower beds all make this building a standout.
